CalFire has released a new Fire Hazard Severity Zone Map.
Almost every wildland-urban interface community in the state has seen a wildfire severity risk increase with the latest CALFIRE update.
Government Code section 51179(a) requires that each city adopt a fire severity zone ordinance. The State Fire Marshall has proposed a map designating most areas within the city as Very High Fire Severity Zones. See map at here > https://cdn.townweb.com/fortjonesca.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/FJ-Fire-Hazard-severity-zone-Very-High.pdf. Nearly the entire city is designated as a very high fire severity zone, with a small portion of the town is designated as high fire severity zone. If the agency finds that a change in designation from high to very high severity zone is necessary for effective fire protection in the area, Government code section 51179(b) allows the agency to redesignate a high severity zone as very high severity zone. Based on the opinion of the Fire Chief of the Fort Jones Fire Department, staff is proposing that the High Severity Zone in the Town be upgraded to Very High Severity Zone as shown in the map below
